Sunday, December 8, 2013, Benefit for the Artists’ Quarter, 5-11+PM
(Written by Andrea Canter)

The Artists Quarter, dubbed one of the world's best jazz clubs by Downbeat Magazine and Twin Cities jazz fans, will close December 31st. If, when and where it will reopen remains uncertain at this time. One certainty is that owner Kenny Horst is calling it quits, and that there will be significant costs associated with the closing. After much cajoling, Kenny reluctantly agreed to allow his friends and fellow musicians to hold a benefit to raise funds to offset his transition expenses-- on Sunday, December 8, 5 pm at the AQ.

Notes vocalist Lucia Newell, who is spearheading this event, "It is our goal that Kenny not go out broke from keeping the AQ open for all of us all these years and giving many musicians a place to really play what’s in our hearts and minds, and a home away from home for all to listen to and hear these dedicated, talented musicians play. Kenny is the first guy to step up and make a benefit for everyone else, but will not ask anything for himself. So we have found some anonymous donors who will match up to  $10,000 of donations to help Kenny with his closing and transitioning costs." A minimum donation of $10 is requested as cover for the evening.

Donations
Anyone who would like to donate but cannot attend can mail a check --made out to the Artists Quarter—to:

To date, many musicians have stepped forward to offer their talents for this event, which will close with an open jam starting around 10 pm.  In addition to nonstop music, there will be some light finger-food munchies throughout the evening (or for as long as they last) and some Special AQ Cocktails will be featured at the bar.

Thanks!
Thanks to AQ owner Kenny Horst for the past 18 years of hard work and personal sacrifice that have kept the Artists Quarter going as a haven for local and visiting jazz artists, for veterans, newbies and students, as the Midwest epicenter for jazz lovers and performers who prefer to hear the music in a true listening room. Thanks to all the musicians, fans, and folks behind the scenes for the love, support and energy you have given over the years to help keep jazz alive in the Twin Cities! We will find ways to keep the music alive and well in 2014 and continue the legacy of the AQ and Kenny Horst.

“Magraw is a guitarist's guitarist - talented, skilled, adventurous, and never lacking the playful spirit behind his ever-present smile. He sees the threaded connections between all music, threads that might seem disparate to most others. In a world that asks us to define, categorize, and compartmentalize, Magraw (true to form) runs against the grain and simply asks us to listen. And we should." -- The Podium

"As reader or singer, Lucia Newell is a magnificent interpreter who communicates through intonation, phrasing, faultless diction (in two languages) and a husky contralto... She sings a capella with the same expressive ease as she reads Neruda--in English or Spanish...Spoken or sung, Newell's words tell stories as much from the sound and feel of the words as from their meaning...Newell and Holden engage in a luscious spontaneously improvised duet on 3Ode to the Apple2 where only the words are pre-determined, their notes spiked with devilish humor and dissonant harmonies, and even a final bite of the fruit."

"Most riveting, and most downbeat, is a wrenching duet of voice and piano on 'Spring Is Here.' Reminiscent of the great partnership of Fred Hersch and Norma Winstone, Laura weaves a tingling, chilling, mildly dissonant mesh while Lucia turns her heart inside out, filling the air with the emptiness and despair the lyrics demand."

"While Newell may be the only 'vocalist,' all four 'instruments' are direct extensions of the artists' souls, and each 'sings' with glorious tone and color, each a unique voice contributing to a seamlessly assembled union."
- Andrea Canter, JazzPolice.com, September 2006

(Check out the article on Phil Hey in the September issue of Mpls. St. Paul Magazine on page 282.) We will be performing a tribute to the late and truly great Betty ‘Bebop’ Carter, to her unique style, scat, innovative arrangements, and vast contribution to jazz singing and jazz music. Although Betty left us eight years ago, in September of 1998, her voice continues to echo in our ears and hearts and minds. This is what Steve Huey of the All Music Guide had to say:

“Arguably the most adventurous female jazz singer of all time, Betty Carter was an idiosyncratic stylist and a restless improviser who pushed the limits of melody and harmony as much as any bebop horn player. The husky-voiced Carter was capable of radical, off-the-cuff reworkings of whatever she sang, abruptly changing tempos and dynamics, or rearranging the lyrics into distinctive, off-the-beat rhythmic patterns. She could solo for 20 minutes, scat at lightning speed, or drive home an emotion with wordless, bluesy moans and sighs. She wasn't quite avant-garde, but she was definitely "out." Yet as much as Carter was fascinated by pure, abstract sound, she was also a sensitive lyric interpreter when she chose, a tender and sensual ballad singer sometimes given to suggestive asides.”

Come join us in this long overdue celebration of Betty Carter. 9 PM to 1 AM. Admission $10.
